3 Server-Assisted Wireless Public-Key Infrastructure
This project aims at developing a data security technology for enabling e-commerce on wireless platforms. When bridging a client (mobile device such as wireless Palm) with an application server, the wireless gateway also exposes a security loophole of the architecture. An end-to-end security solution is to enhance the client device with SIM/WIM smart-card to handle the expensive PKI (Public-Key Infrastructure) operations bypassing the SSL/WTLS exchange at the gateway.

As an alternative, the server-assisted schemes of RSA cryptography called ¡§SARSA¡¨ (Server-assisted RSA algorithm) and ECC cryptography called ¡§SAECC¡¨ (Server-assisted ECC algorithm) are proposed. The schemes provide the basis for an effective but low-cost solution to the PKI support for wireless clients. The client, by driving the gateway server to compute the RSA/ECC cryptographic processing on his/her behalf, can accomplish PKI functions with his/her own minimal resources. Of course, the gateway is blinded of the computational parameters to prevent information leakage and to uphold end-to-end security.

A pilot project with a local online wireless storefront called ¡§Wireless PKI e-shop¡¨ is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of the technology when applied on mobile commerce. The storefront uses not only SARSA/SAECC utilities but also message digest (e.g. MD5) and secret (symmetric) key encryption (e.g. DES) so as to illustrate a successful and secure transaction used in the mobile commerce.

Outcome of the project is expected to benefit all parties, including the network operators, device manufacturers, solution providers, and online merchants. The public customers will be the ultimate beneficiaries when the convenience of e-banking, online shopping and information access becomes real in our daily life.

This project is co-operated with IBM and HKU.

4 Automated Data Mining for Hot Bundle Analysis and Inventory Control
Industry players agree that data mining technology, as one of the strong pillars in CRM (Customer Relationship Management), plays an important role in discovering customer behavior. However, applying the technology in business applications requires mining experts. Without expertise in adjusting more than 20 parameters in the mining process, data mining means nothing valuable to enterprises. We introduce this R&D project to propose a fundamental change to traditional data mining tools to minimize the involvement of technical expertise in adjusting parameters.

The first problem we tackle is the mining of association rule which has found applications in many different business arenas. We propose to consider a more practical problem, roughly speaking, it is to mine the top N most frequent itemsets, new algorithms are introduced for mining N-most interesting itemsets. Another application of association rule is in the inventory control problem, where the products carried by a retailer or a service provider are varied from time to time to optimize the profits. For such a problem the effect of cross-selling should be considered. We strongly believe the research output would benefit the Hong Kong-based enterprises by the way of understanding their customer behavior through automated and manageable data mining platform.
5 Drill Process Monitoring System ¡V Drill Depth Calculation
Hong Kong's mountainous terrain, heavy rain and dense development make us to prone to risk from landslides, which could threaten life and property, block roads and disrupt the lives of the community. As human cannot eradicate risks thoroughly, there are ways to reduce them, such as exercising geotechnical control on investigation, design and construction of new slopes and systematically investigating and upgrading government slopes. The Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering Department (CED) established in 1977 not only governs the control but also provides the aesthetics of the slopes. It supervises abundant of slope safety-related projects rectifying the substandard slopes, which includes the following major processes:
  • Ground investigation
  • Soil testing
  • Design
  • Upgrading works
  • Providing landscape treatment ¡@
The ground investigation is carried out by a specialist contractor using boring and drilling rigs and excavators to take soil and rock samples in order to check the ground condition and its engineering properties and look for and identify any industrial contamination.

A soil test is a process by which elements (e.g. phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfur, manganese, copper and zinc) are chemically removed from the soil and measured for their "plant available" content within the sample. The quantity of available nutrients in the sample determines the amount of fertilizer that is recommended. A soil test also measures soil pH, humic matter and exchangeable acidity. These analyses indicate whether lime is needed and, if so, how much to apply. Usually, this process is conducted by a chemist and is used for the landscape treatment of hydro-seeding the slope.

After the previous processes identifying the potential critical surface, with the aid of computer, a design containing a series of pits to be drilled with the pit position and the pit depth along the slope is worked out.

The upgrading works and landscape treatment involves the following tasks. The upgrading works rectifies the slopes for higher safety standards while the landscape treatment beautifies the slopes for a better environment.
¡@
  • drilling
  • installation of soil nails
  • installation of raking drains
  • upgrading of the rock portion of the slope
  • thickening of existing masonry walls
  • reconstruction of drainage system
  • hydro-seeding of the slope
  • construction of toe wall planters
In this project, we are interested in finding the drilling depth and detecting any barriers (e.g. rock and stone) during drilling process. There are two major concerns in the traditional drilling project. Whenever excavators suspect to encounter barriers during drilling, site workers and communities may make their own decision based on their experience to terminate the drilling process, because a barrier may indicate a stop of drilling. However, as the barriers appear behind the slope, nobody knows whether there are barriers without any further investigation, especially during the drilling process. For the sake of clarity of the existence, it is a need to carry out barrier detection during the drilling process. Also, the drilling depth is measured manually after the drilling process, which is quite costly. Another drawback is that any fault made during the drilling process cannot be found (e.g. insufficient depth drilling) until the final measurement is conducted. It is time-consuming for excavators to re-dig pits with a greater depth. An early diagnosis of determining the drilling depth and detecting any barriers can help to improve the situations.
